LONDON — Britain’s largest pharmacy chains have begun selling sildenafil-based tablets and other products to people with heart failure, the health service’s chief executive said.
The move follows an international launch of the Viagra drug in Britain last month and is part of a broader trend that has emerged among the leading pharmacy chains. In a separate transaction last week, the health service said it is buying the tablets to increase its awareness about the condition.
But the decision comes as the drug faces criticism from critics who say it is an attempt to silence people who have suffered serious heart attacks or strokes. The drug’s label is clear on its use for erectile dysfunction, but experts say it poses a potential health risk.
Officials at Britain’s GPhC pharmacy, which is based in London, say they are no longer allowing people to buy the pills in the UK.
“Our pharmacy is a public trust and we will continue to take stern action against the pharmaceutical industry,” said David Healy, president of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
He said: “If they are selling something for the NHS, they shouldn’t be able to get it for the rest of the world.”
Officials at GPhC say it is not aware of any case of the drug being sold to anyone with a heart condition, but they are taking a hard look at its use for people with the condition and are encouraging people to check the label.
The new stores, however, are “very cautious” in their approach to public health, said Dr David Brennan, medical director of London’s heart team.
“We are seeing a lot of people who have had a heart attack or stroke coming off the drugs,” he said.
The drug, which is only available to NHS patients, was developed by Pfizer, which makes the medication.
A spokesman for the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said: “This decision was taken to avoid a rush to judgment by consumers and pharmacies.
“In the past, pharmacies have been using sildenafil tablets to treat erectile dysfunction and other sexual dysfunction. They are also using this medicine to treat pulmonary hypertension.
“Our medicines are safe and effective, and we know people who take them don’t suffer from any serious side effects from their use.
“The medicines we have are safe and effective.”
Doctors say people with heart failure are more likely to experience side effects from taking the drugs, which include headaches, dizziness and muscle aches. They also say people with a history of liver problems, high blood pressure or diabetes should not take the tablets.
The drug has been approved for use in adults and children with a mild form of erectile dysfunction, and is not approved for use in children.
Pfizer, which makes the drug, said that its decision was part of a broader trend in the health service that has emerged in recent years, particularly in Europe. The company said the move was an attempt to “restore the trust” in the pharmacy industry by promoting the treatment.
